Combating Sassy Mouth Syndrome

Sassy talking children and me just don’t mix. Hearing little mouths with bad attitude has always sat wrong with me. The tone of disrespect is like nails on a chalkboard.  It’s just WRONG!  As a young mother, I vowed to never have a sassy mouth in my home. Imagine my surprise when 4 years ago one was born into my family.  Shock and disillusionment followed.  How could I, the mother of 3 boys who I taught diligently to watch their tongues, now be harangued by a sassy, princess child?

The sass and attitude snuck up on me.  It blind-sided me.  Me, the momma, who promised to always have respectful children, now had a girl-child who thought she was the queen mother…..

  2. Ahhh....girls are different. We have a boy sandwich; girl, boy, boy, girl. Boys are actually easier with the sass than girls. Boys just get angry, fight it out and get it over with!

  5. Your article is really good Jenn! Do you think there's any hope for this momma who hasn't done a good job of curbing my oldest's sassiness and now she will be 13 in a couple of weeks?!

  7. What a great article! I just went to the well and read the whole thing. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has kids who struggle with this. I do a lot of "try that again" and I make them keep saying it until they can talk nice to me and each other. I need to remember to quote that verse to them and then have them quote it back to me. I use some stuff you can buy at Walmart called "Stop Bite". It is in the finger nail polish section. I used it to help Hailey stop sucking her thumbs (worked like a charm) and then God gave me the idea to brush it on their lip when I caught them in a lie. It doesn't hurt them at all, it just tastes extremely bitter. I tell you what though, the lying has come to an almost complete standstill. I rarely have to use it now. I should use it for sassy mouth, too. Great post!

  8. Great reminders. My two 3 1/2 year olds each have their days with being mouthy, and the diligence required is sometimes exhausting. Thanks for the encouragement here to keep at it, and the other great ideas too.....
