I’m either getting old, or I’m extremely out of shape, or more likely I’m both! :)
My body is aching, asking for mercy, begging for rest, and moaning with every move.
It’s this time of year, I just can’t stop. And I won’t give up!
There are weeds to pull. Beds to fertilize. Mulch to spread. Seeds to plant. Plants to divide. And new plants to drool over and add to my gardens (thank goodness for friends who have plants to share).
It’s definitely the time of year when I regain some of the muscle that I lose over the more confining winter months. It’s the time of year when I can’t deny that I am a weakling and I should really exercise during the winter!
I tell you what if hoeing the garden was a year round activity I would be buff! :) If removing sod was part of my repertoire I would have amazing upper body strength. If pulling weeds was a year round activity I would have less flabby arms and better cardiovascular health!
Anyway, you get the point! I’ve been busy in the garden!
This past weekend we got three LONG rows of corn, one LONG row of Green beans and a shorter row of Lima beans planted. We have about 6 more rows of corn to plant which we will do in 2 week intervals. Plus I still need to get my cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and tomatoes planted. My spinach, lettuces, radishes and turnips are doing well. And I am especially excited about my snow peas which are doing really good. In the past I’ve had trouble growing them….a soil deficiency, I think. And my potatoes are starting to emerge from the ground. I was wondering if they would be able to come up since promptly after I planted them we got deluged with hard driving rain which succeeded in washing away some of the soil from the trench we had dug for the potatoes. Then more hard rain that compacted the soil. But, glory be…. they are peeking through!
I would show you a picture of the vegetable garden, but it would feature a whole lot of bare dirt with a few small plants poking up…really not picture worthy at this point.
My backyard has a bit more to offer right now. Blueberries are blooming and growing, strawberries are flourishing, blackberries are prolific, red raspberries are having their first good year, and my new grape vine is unfurling its leaves.
Every time I step outside I am distracted…it can be really bad! I spent 3 hours in my gardens yesterday. I lost all track of time. Today…I MUST focus on laundry, and my writing assignment. I must, I MUST. I will not even glance at my flower bed that needs some more weeding. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. We’ll see!
How does your garden grow?
