Our School Room~ A Work In Progress

School in our home for the first eight and a half years centered around the dining room table.  Each day we gathered there to learn and grow in knowledge and life.  The walls were covered in maps, charts and art.  The edges of the room were lined with crates and a filing cabinet holding school work. It worked well for us.
In the middle of this past school year we were able to move our boys bedroom to a different location (still in the house in case you were wondering!).  This freed up their old room for us to use as a school room.  To say I was thrilled was an understatement!  Why was I so happy when our previous arrangement was working out just fine?  Well, after 8 years of homeschooling we were accumulating quite the library of school books and literature.
Now I can keep all of our school supplies, books and information in on location and not scattered throughout several spots in the house.
SO…Welcome to our School Room~ A Work In Progress

My newest addition to our school room is the art center.  For the past 8 years I have had all this art stuff in boxes in our basement.  I tried to bring it out once and a while to let my children do art, but most often I forgot about it.  This year I decided, since I have a room dedicated solely to learning, that it was high time to get out the art supplies!
WOW!
You should have seen the response!  Each of my children were wanting to create before I even finished unpacking and arranging.  The creative juices were flowing this weekend and many interesting and unique projects were made.

I still have plans for our school room.  I would like to find a big old frame and use it to frame part of the wall painted with chalk board paint.  I have a wooden end table I want to paint white and I need to finish painting the clothes pins on the art wall.
But, most importantly our school room is ready for our first day of school!
Let the Learning Begin!

*Just a side note….my three youngest children still gravitate to the dining room table to do their school work!  Old habits die hard, I guess.  Actually this fine, since it puts them all in a central location and I can work with each of them easily that way.  Plus the school room is a bit small and for a couple of my boys that is REALLY distracting! :)
Do you have a room dedicated for your school and school supplies?

Love the art wall, the table in front of the window and the art center...It makes me want to create at your home.
    Such an inspiration!
We live in a 2 bedroom home. For the longest time I turned my dining room into our bedroom so the children could each have a room to themselves, and then a good friend of mine suggested putting the children together and creating a family space in the dining/living space...that has worked so well for us. This will be our first school year in our new set up and we are all thrilled!
thanks for sharing your shcool room.
    I love it!!!

  5. Hi there, I LOVE your art wall and different table work stations!! We, too use a central location for our homeschooling since we have no "extra" rooms, but we are trying to find the balance this year of having a more permanent and organized school area and yet not totally lose our living room. ;-)
    Happy Learning!!

  11. What a great school room you have & I have to say I love, love, love your art centre!!!
We also have a dedicated schoolroom, but I do most of the teaching at the dining table & then send them to their desks to do their individual work - we also have our "library" in there & a lounge for relaxing & reading (or making into a fort as the twins would rather do with it!!0
    Enjoy your new school year!
