The year was 1983. This picture was taken by my 4th grade, home room, teacher Mr. Roach. He took pictures of all the kids in the class, sitting on this bench. I don't remember why. Maybe it was for Mother's Day or something of that sort.
Anyway, check out my out fit!! Very 80's! The glasses are a dead give away to the time period! They were so big! But, I was sporting a really cute red heart sticker on the lens. That made them at least a little bit cool! I personally dig the brown shoes, white socks and rolled pant legs!
My mom loves this picture. I'm not sure why. For years she had it sitting on her dresser. For me this picture brings back the memory of Mr. Roach. What I remember most about him was that he believed in me. He noticed in me a shy, self-conscious little girl who was very unsure of herself. He saw the insecurities I dealt with. I just wanted to fit in, feel pretty and be liked. He realized that and made me feel accepted. I will never forget the joy I felt when I read what he wrote in my yearbook. He circled my picture and wrote, "Miss America some day!" You can imagine how my little girl heart sang!
Well, I never made Miss America. I didn't ever try. But, from that day on a part of me (even if it was teeny-tiny) knew that even if I didn't feel accepted by the "in" crowd, I was accepted by others, for who I was, big glasses and all. And by golly some one, besides my parents, thought I was beautiful! What more could a girl want!

I remember having to roll the pants! You just weren't cool if you didn't do that!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture! When I heard the teacher's name I thought it would be followed by a terrible story (see? that's what I think of roaches). I'm so glad he was a positive influence on you!
ReplyDeleteAs for the attire? A beautiful specimen of the 80's and I had those same shoes!
I rolled the jeans because it was cool thing to do!
ReplyDeleteMost be because your class started it?!
Cute pix!
Thanks for visiting!
You coulda been Miss America. It's never to late- I think there's a Mrs. America for us old married gals too!
ReplyDeleteYou were smart to participate in this meme. The punishment for not participating is brutal: http://anapronaday.blogspot.com/2008/06/throw-her-in-stocks.html
The best teachers make the best stories! What a great picture (glasses and all)
ReplyDeleteYou were adorable!
ReplyDeleteThat's good teacher.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how teachers can influence our lives for good? I had two teachers that really make a difference in my life and I love them for it!
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher I try make an extra effort to compliment my students. Sometimes I wonder if they even care what I say to them... but after reading this post, I will do it even more often. If I could uplift even one student, it would be a HUGE blessing.
You looked very sweet, and I think I had those same glasses. :o)
ReplyDeleteAs a college professor I have to tell you that I try to carry that same intensity into my work as Mr. Roach did with 4th graders. Everyone needs to know that they can be a shining star. Thanks for the affirmation, once again, that I'm exactly where I should be.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I had glasses that ate my face too!
I love seeing pictures from the
ReplyDelete80s. Brings back so many memories! You were (and are!) adorable! Thank God for the people who influence our lives in such a postive way...I always try to remember now that the way I speak to a little one might have a lasting affect on them.
metamorphasis is in us all from that era and what a blessing to have someone believe in you enough to impact your heart that much. you did turn into a "miss america"! mr. roach was right!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder your mom likes this picture, you look so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice memory of a teacher! I hope my daughters have such inspirational teachers when they go to school! :)
How incredibly sweet and special! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo and sounds like you were blessed with someone who was truly gifted as a teacher.
ReplyDeleteMy fourth grade teacher was one of my favorites too.
AWW! Great pic and a great memory!
ReplyDeleteI am getting together a blog thread about this same thing! - how funny!
Maybe your mom saw all that in the photo too and put it on her dresser for that reason. It's an adorable photo and a great story to go with it.
ReplyDeleteHey Jen! I'm still reading your blog...just haven't had time to post. I love that picture of you too! Maybe because it captures innocence and beauty. And I think you have far succeeded the accomplishments of Miss America. Love you sis!
